Blogging Tips: Titling Your Posts

I recently decided to do a small series of blogging tips. The things I will share vary from suggestions/questions from readers and things that I've discovered in my time blogging thus far. I certainly don't consider myself a pro at blogging and I still have a lot to learn, but there are a few things I wish someone had told me in the beginning, so I decided to share them with all of you.
First up, earlier this week a few lovely friends of mine had a conversation on Twitter about how they struggle with creating post titles. Like I said up top, I am certainly no expert, but there are three things I try to keep in mind when titling my posts...

1. Make It Stand Out
I follow a lot of blogs, and I'll admit, sometimes I skip over posts if the title doesn't draw me in. We often judge a book by it's cover (a literal book, that is), and in the blogging world, your posts may be judged by a title. Choose something catchy, but don't try too hard...catchy does not equal cheesy.

2. Think About How It Will Look As A Post URL
Your post titles appear as part of that posts' URL. The post URL is made up of these parts -  http://[blog URL]/[year]/[month as two digits]/[post title up to 39 characters].html. Basically, make those first 39 characters count (Blogger ignores the words "the," "a," and "an."). If someone copies and pastes your posts' URL into a tweet or a Facebook post with no other telling information, will people still want to click it based on the URL?

3. Think About Your Google Potential
Consider if your post title might show up when someone googles a topic. For example, if I was to write a post about the things I used most when Gunner was first born, I could title it two things...1) "Things That Saved My Life During Our First Weeks" OR 2) "Newborn Must Haves." The first title is definitely true, but the second title certainly has better Google potential. The higher each posts' Google potential is, the better your chances of random people coming across and reading your blog.

Well, that's it for today! I hope this first tip and the three things to consider with it will help you. If you have anything you'd like for me to post on, leave a comment or shoot me an email at texaslovebirds {at} gmail {dot} com. I can't promise I'll know about your topic, but I'll do my best to research and address it!
